Chemical stains, integral pigments, and decorative aggregates give concrete countertops the possibility for creating any desired look or feel, making them a versatile medium of choice.

They exude feelings of warmth and character, where no other countertop choice can compare. They are created by hand, not fabricated from a “blank”, making every one an individual piece of art. Regular use and time only intensifies their character and appearance. Their flexible form allows for custom sizes and shapes. Integral drain boards and custom trivets or recesses for cutting boards are complements for a personal touch.

 

If you enjoy warm natural things, coloring in variations and the appearance of textures, concrete is the best choice. It is not cold, monochromatic or repetitive in pattern. They are not sidewalks. Concrete countertops are made with precisely measured concrete mixes that have been field tested to exceed their design purpose. Structural additives like fiber and steel are used internally where design geometry form may require them too. Hairline cracks may occur during curing or later having absolutely no structural effect. They are merely features which occur due to the natural chemistry present in the concrete countertop. These features only add to the character of the countertop which enriches their appearance.

 

A typical countertop cast at 1.5 inches will weigh approximately 18 pounds per square foot. Standard cabinetry will easily support this weight and no additional strengthening should be required. If a countertop is designed thicker than this arrangements may need to be made, but this is another benefit to choose the thickness as a design feature. They are typically cast in various shapes up to 8 feet in length, due to handling and installation often using seams as a design feature. Other lengths will be considered upon request if structurally permissible. There are different finishing techniques available for each countertop (polished, natural, and textured) and sheens (high gloss build, gloss, semi-gloss, matte, flat). After evaluating individual specific needs the appropriate finish will be discussed. Concrete is very hard, however everything in this world can be scratched and cutting on them may result in few scratches and dull knives. It is also heat resistant, but the thermal shock may explode a piece of aggregate leaving a blemish on the surface. Cutting boards and trivets can be created into the design giving a personal touch. Maintaining a concrete countertop may vary slightly depending on the finishing process used to craft the countertop. Daily cleaning is performed with a neutral ph non abrasive cleaner. Any accidental damages or blemishes can often be repaired relatively effectively, unlike most other countertop choices. If you are tired of granite, come home to concrete!
